Leading RTOS for StarCore Now Available in Dual Mode Version for Convergent SC2000 Family

Quadros Systems unique RTXC dual mode RTOS optimizes control and DSP code on latest generation of StarCore synthesizable cores

EW2005: 10-130

Embedded World 2005, Neuremberg, Germany, February 22, 2005 - Quadros Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of configurable and scaleable real-time operating systems (RTOS), announced dual mode RTOS support for the latest StarCore processors. RTXC/dm is the first RTOS to support both multi-stack and single-stack operation within the same API development and run-time environment, allowing both RISC and DSP code to run fully optimized on a single core. The dual-mode RTXC Quadros RTOS addresses the needs of convergent processor designs, such as the recently launched StarCore SC2000 family, that are rapidly taking market share of high-volume consumer multimedia electronics applications, one of the fastest growing market segments.

These new generation devices provide the power and flexibility that once required a RISC + DSP design in a single unified core, thus greatly reducing hardware cost, power consumption and software complexity. The dual mode RTXC/dm from Quadros Systems is the first RTOS to address the dual nature of convergent processors by optimizing real-time execution of applications that use both control and dataflow code.

"RTXC is already a leading choice for StarCore processors," noted Allen Hyman, Strategic Alliances Manager at StarCore LLC. "With this innovative dual mode RTXC Quadros RTOS technology, the SC2000’s enhanced performance and cost benefits can be fully exploited. The single core, convergent approach delivers greater simplicity and flexibility at lower cost, and RTXC/dm allows these benefits to be accessed directly by users."

Traditionally, embedded multimedia electronics applications requiring both RISC and DSP functionality have targeted separate cores with separate development teams and separate development tool chains. The convergence of control and dataflow functionality on a single core has many obvious advantages, both in hardware and software, particularly in high-volume consumer applications. A unified processor lowers unit cost, simplifies system complexity, and reduces power consumption-significant advantages in price-critical applications that are often handheld.

Working within a single software environment for an application—both during development and at run-time—is also of major benefit. Using a single development environment can shorten time-to-market as it minimizes the tool learning curve, inter-team development resolutions and dual environment debug time. Until now, however, no RTOS has addressed the problem of optimizing for the very different run-time requirements of RISC and DSP application code on the same core.

A conventional RTOS for a RISC processor provides an optimized multi-stack environment for embedded applications that are typically interrupt-driven and involve frequent changes of program flow. Conversely, DSP code needs to execute a tight set of repetitive data manipulation functions to completion within a defined timeframe, and must respond rapidly to changing data sets. Therefore a lightweight, single-stack environment enables the DSP code to execute with maximum efficiency.

If DSP threads are run under a multi-stack RTOS designed to support efficient execution of conventional control flow/interrupt-driven tasks, the response time to changing data-sets takes a significant hit. Similarly, RTOS environments designed for dataflow applications do not handle the multiple interrupts of an interruptive, control-driven application.

In the low-cost, low-power application targeted by convergent processors, such a performance hit is untenable. Quadros RTXC/dm is the first RTOS that specifically addresses this problem, delivering optimum performance for convergent control-dataflow applications. By providing a single-stack environment for DSP threads, and a protected multi-stack environment for interrupt-driven tasks, RTXC/dm can ensure that both RISC and DSP application code execute with maximum efficiency.

Quadros RTXC/dm for the StarCore 2000 family supports StarCore's advanced architectural features, such as user and supervisor privilege levels, as well as offering hardware memory protection, ensuring the highest level of code security and data integrity.

Price & Availability

Single-project licenses for RTXC/dm start at $15,500. Price includes a source code distribution and a Software Development Kit (SDK).

About the RTXC Quadros Family of Real-time Operating Systems

RTXC/dm is one of four highly scalable real-time operating systems in the RTXC Quadros family, offering distinct performance advantages for each of the major processing models. RTXC/ss (single stack) utilizes a lightweight specialized executive to support high data rate and signal processing applications. RTXC/ms (multi-stack) is optimized for control processing using an event-driven, prioritized, preemptive scheduler. RTXC/dm (dual mode) marries RTXC/ms and RTXC/ss and is ideal for convergent processing applications which combine DSP/dataflow and RISC/control processing in a single-core architecture. Both RTXC/ms and RTXC/dm are brought together under RTXC/mp (multiprocessing) in various combinations to support multicore and multiprocessor implementations.
