Quadros Systems Ports RTXC Quadros RTOS to XScale PXA27x

RTXC powers media players and other portable consumer devices

Embedded Systems Conference: 130

ESC, San Jose, CA, April 4, 2006 - Quadros Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of configurable and scalable real-time operating systems (RTOS), continued its commitment to portable consumer devices, by announcing a port of the RTXC Quadros RTOS to the Intel XScale PXA27x family. The RTXC Quadros dual-mode RTOS—with its control and data streaming capabilities—effortlessly manages the data streaming characteristics and the interrupt-intensive control processing of the highly integrated XScale processor. The small footprint and excellent efficiency of the RTXC Quadros RTOS as well as the low-power optimization of the XScale PXA27x processor makes an excellent combination for developers of portable consumer devices such as media players and PDAs with color displays, built-in cameras, web browsing, streaming audio and video and other processing-intense functionality.

As the first XScale processor with wireless MMX technology, the Intel PXA27x processor brings desktop-like multimedia performance of 2D and 3D gaming, streaming MPEG-4 video, wireless encryption/decryption, digital TV reception and voice recognition to the cell phone and PDA world. With Wireless Intel SpeedStep technology, the developer gains granular control over power management with five power-saving modes: Idle, Deep Idle, Standby, Sleep, and Deep Sleep. The Mobile Scalable Link offers a next-generation, scalable, low-power communication link between application and communication processors—all impressive resources to offer the portable device developer.

The RTXC Quadros dual-mode RTOS enables the developer to get the most out of these powerful resources, saving valuable processor cycles. This efficiency also pays big dividends by lowering power consumption.

“Intel is a leading supplier of processor solutions for many of today’s most innovative handheld and communications solutions,” noted Tom Barrett, president of Quadros Systems. “The XScale family features advanced technologies that help deliver high performance, flexibility and robust functionality in the small size, lower power framework of a handheld, battery-powered device. RTXC Quadros RTOS is fine-tuned to maximize all of these hardware capabilities and make them easily accessible to the designer.”

Quadros offers a wide range of integrated software for the PXA27x family including USB host and device solutions, file systems, graphics libraries for LCD support, and TCP/IP support for wireless cards. Quadros supports SD-based peripherals on the PXA27x with a complete SDIO protocol stack. In addition, the RTXC RTOS supports protected code space using the XScale memory management unit (MMU). These integrated solutions help ease the development process for portable consumer devices.

RTXC Quadros supports the PXA27x with the Intel C++ Software Development Suite.

Price & Availability

Single-project licenses for RTXC Quadros dual-mode RTOS start at $15,500.

About the RTXC Quadros Family of Real-time Operating Systems

RTXC/dm is one of four highly scalable real-time operating systems in the RTXC Quadros family, offering distinct performance advantages for each of the major processing models. RTXC/ss (single stack) uses a lightweight specialized executive to support high data rate and signal processing applications. RTXC/ms (multi-stack) is optimized for control processing using an event-driven, prioritized, preemptive scheduler. RTXC/dm (dual mode) marries RTXC/ms and RTXC/ss and is ideal for convergent processing applications that combine DSP/dataflow and RISC/control processing in a single-core architecture. Both RTXC/ms and RTXC/dm are brought together under RTXC/mp (multiprocessing) in various combinations to support multicore and multiprocessor implementations.
