Quadros Announces v2 of its High Performance File System

RTXCflashfile now delivers improved read/write performance with a smaller RAM footprint

Houston TX, May 12, 2006 - Quadros Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of RTOS-based development and run-time software for embedded systems announced the release of the latest version of its high performance file system, RTXCflashfile. Major enhancements include faster read, write and seek functions and dramatically reduced memory requirements (RAM).

RTXCflashfile is a high performance, fail-safe file system which is used to manage data stored on resident flash devices such as NAND and NOR flash memory. Systems using RTXCflashfile are 100% safe from power loss or reset conditions. In addition the file system manages the flash hardware with sophisticated wear-leveling routines that optimize performance and longevity of the device. RTXCflashfile uses a secure and reentrant API and includes other important features such as long file names, multiple volumes, and simultaneously opened files.

In version 2 Quadros Systems has improved on the already fast read-write performance of the RTXCflashfile system by incorporating new data storage and retrieval algorithms. Write and erase times for Flash devices are notoriously slow. RTXCflashfile works directly with the HW structure to provide highly efficient access. The file system employs a proprietary write caching-system so that only changes to the file descriptor tables are stored, minimizing flash chip usage. Specialized Erase Suspend/Resume algorithms are employed so that erasable blocks are erased by an interruptible thread. Then, the file system uses its block status knowledge to utilize pre-erased blocks first while still managing wear leveling of the flash device.

RAM utilization is always important to the embedded developer. In version 2 of RTXCflashfile Quadros Systems has dramatically reduced RAM requirements. Plus the company now provides a memory estimation tool – a Windows-based executable—that helps developers determine the RAM footprint early in the project.
